“Non-Nursing” Skills Involved in Nursing Essay Writing

Essay writing is a universal or global skill and pedagogical tool. This means skills which appear to be outside a specific area of study come into play. For nursing essay writing, there are some “non-Nursing” skills involved. These skills include those which are least related to the area of nursing and those which are simply not associated by people to nursing.

Here is a run down of some of the described skills, how these skills are important and can be developed:

• Writing Skills – First up is writing skills. It can never be over emphasised or mentioned that writing has been greatly disassociated with nursing. However, writing is greatly used in nursing but in its less developed form or state. Student nurses and practising nurses write write up and written reports. These include description and narration of patients’ nursing record and documentation. If the student nurse deliberately practises improving his or her writing of the nursing reports, he or she can develop his or her writing skills and can apply it to writing a nursing essay.
• Statistics Skills – Statistics is associated with mathematics, business and engineering courses and careers. Nevertheless, statistics is used extensively in nursing. Clinical studies, experiment and research involve a great deal of statistics and statistics skills. Statistics pertain to numbers and computations and nurses handle numbers and do a lot of computations of medicine in their administration. Again a deliberate practice of mastering numbers will not be difficult for nurses. Applying statistics skills to the nursing essay will not be also.
• Planning Skills – When talking about planning, management and business studies are the first to come to mind. Not known to many, nursing uses a lot of planning and planning skills.  Nurses also plan their day, their rounds and patient management. Nurses are also good planners and managers. In writing their nursing essay, the nurses use planning skills they also have.
